E-Liquid Guide: Everything Important for Better Flavour, Vapour and the Right Nicotine Strength
What is E-Liquid and what is it made of?
E-Liquid, also called vape liquid or e-juice, is the liquid used in e-cigarettes, pod systems and vape kits. It is responsible for the flavour, the visible vapour and, if desired, the nicotine delivery. Choosing the right e-liquid for your vape has a direct effect on flavour intensity, throat hit, vapour production, coil lifespan and overall satisfaction.
-
•Propylene Glycol (PG): Thinner liquid that carries flavour very efficiently and creates a more noticeable throat hit.
-
•Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Thicker liquid that produces denser vapour and a smoother inhale.
-
•Flavourings: Food-grade flavour concentrates for fruit, tobacco, dessert, drink, menthol and many other taste profiles.
-
•Nicotine (optional): Available in different strengths such as 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 10mg or 20mg, as either freebase nicotine or nicotine salt.
-
•Optional purified water: Used by some manufacturers to adjust viscosity.
At VAPE.CH you can find a wide range of premium e-liquids for e-cigarettes from well-known brands, with flavour profiles for every vaping style and nicotine preference.
PG/VG Ratio: The Key to Flavour, Vapour and Device Compatibility
The PG/VG ratio changes how an e-liquid tastes, how much vapour it produces and which device it works best in. Choosing the correct ratio helps prevent leaking, poor wicking, coil burning and weak flavour.
50% VG / 50% PG
The all-round choice: balanced flavour, noticeable throat hit and moderate vapour production.
Best for: pod systems, MTL devices and many beginner-friendly e-cigarettes.
High VG, for example 70/30
The cloud-focused option: denser vapour, smoother inhale and a softer throat hit.
Best for: DL devices, sub-ohm tanks and higher-power setups.
Higher PG blends
The flavour and throat hit choice: stronger flavour transmission, more noticeable throat sensation and less vapour.
Best for: selected MTL devices and users looking for a stronger cigarette-like sensation.
Important: Using a liquid that is too thick for a small pod system can cause poor wicking and burnt hits. Using a very thin liquid in a powerful sub-ohm device can increase leaking and reduce vapour performance.

Which nicotine strength should you choose?
E-liquids are available from 0mg nicotine up to stronger nicotine salt options such as 10mg or 20mg. The best strength depends on your previous smoking habits, your device type and whether you prefer freebase or nicotine salt liquids.
Many users gradually reduce their nicotine level over time, which makes vaping highly flexible and personalised.
DIY liquids, bases and shots
If you want maximum control over flavour intensity, bottle size and nicotine content, DIY mixing is the most flexible option. With bases, nicotine shots and aroma concentrates, you can customise your setup more precisely and often more economically.
DIY liquids are especially interesting for experienced users who want to fine-tune sweetness, cooling, nicotine strength and bottle format.
Quality, Safety and Proper E-Liquid Storage
Why quality matters
When buying e-liquids for e-cigarettes, product quality is essential. High-quality liquids are produced under controlled conditions, use clear ingredient declarations and come from reputable manufacturers. Good quality matters not only for flavour consistency, but also for a cleaner vaping experience and more predictable device performance.
How to store e-liquids correctly
Store your e-liquids in a cool, dry and dark place, ideally in the original bottle with a childproof cap. Avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat. Correct storage helps preserve flavour quality for longer and reduces the risk of oxidation or taste changes after opening.
Always check the best-before date and keep liquids away from children and pets.
Expert Tips for Better Flavour and a Better E-Liquid Experience
Steeping
Some liquids, especially complex dessert or DIY blends, develop a fuller flavour if they are left to rest for several days or even 1 to 2 weeks in a cool, dark place. Shaking the bottle gently once a day can help the flavours blend more evenly.
Temperature and power settings
Lower settings often highlight finer flavour notes, while higher settings may intensify sweetness, warmth and vapour production. Start lower and increase gradually until your e-liquid tastes best without becoming harsh or burnt.
Choose the right coil
The right vaporizer and coil can change your flavour experience significantly. High-VG liquids usually work better with more powerful, more open setups, while 50/50 liquids are often better in pod systems and MTL devices.
Understand flavour profiles
Fruit, menthol, tobacco, dessert, beverage and mixed profiles all perform differently depending on power, airflow and device type. Testing small bottles first is a smart way to identify your real favourites before buying larger formats.
Airflow matters
A tighter airflow usually intensifies flavour and throat hit, while a more open airflow produces more vapour and a smoother draw. Adjusting airflow can completely change how the same e-liquid performs in your device.

Which liquid suits my e‑cigarette (MTL/DL/pod)? 🤔
Choosing the right liquid mainly depends on the PG/VG ratio and the resistance of your coil:
- MTL devices & pod systems (coil > 0.8 ohm): Liquids with 50% VG / 50% PG are best here. They are thin enough for good wicking and provide intense flavour. Nicotine salt liquids often fall into this category and are very popular.
- DL devices & sub‑ohm (coil < 1.0 ohm): Thicker liquids with a high VG content (70% VG or more) are required. These produce large clouds and are smoother on the throat for direct lung inhales. Shortfills are typically high VG.
Always follow the recommendations of your device or coil manufacturer.
💡 Remember: Liquid that is too thick (high VG) in MTL coils leads to wicking issues (dry hits). Liquid that is too thin (high PG) in DL coils can spit or leak.
Which nicotine strength do I need? (Compared to cigarettes) ✅
Choosing a nicotine strength (mg/ml) is very individual. Here is some guidance for switchers, based on previous cigarette consumption (for MTL devices):
- Heavy smokers (> 20 cigs/day): Start with 18–20 mg/ml (ideally as nicotine salt for a smoother hit).
- Moderate smokers (10–20 cigs/day): Try 9–12 mg/ml (freebase) or 10–20 mg/ml (nicotine salt).
- Light smokers (< 10 cigs/day): Start with 3–6 mg/ml (freebase) or 5–10 mg/ml (nicotine salt).
For DL vapers, 0 mg, 3 mg or 6 mg/ml are common, as each puff delivers more vapour and therefore more nicotine.
Important: The mg/ml value of liquids is not directly comparable to the mg indication on cigarette packs, as that shows the amount measured in the smoke. It is better to start a bit higher and reduce if needed.
💡 Tip: If the liquid feels too strong (harsh throat hit, dizziness), choose a lower strength or try nicotine salts. If satisfaction is too low, increase the strength (up to max. 20 mg/ml).
What is the difference between nicotine salt and regular nicotine? 🧂
The main difference lies in the pH level and the resulting vaping experience:
Regular nicotine (freebase)
- Chemically more basic (high pH).
- With increasing dose it causes a stronger throat hit.
- Is absorbed quickly by the body.
- Ideal for vapers who like a strong throat hit or prefer lower strengths.
Nicotine salt
- Nicotine is combined with an acid (often benzoic acid) to lower the pH (more acidic).
- Even at high concentrations (up to 20 mg/ml) it causes little to no throat hit.
- Nicotine uptake can be smoother/slower, but the effect often lasts longer.
- Ideal for switchers and pod‑system users who need higher nicotine strengths without a harsh hit.
Note: Because the “warning effect” of harshness is missing with nicotine salts, there is a higher risk of overdosing at high strengths (headache, nausea) if you puff too often or too intensely.
💡 Recommendation: Nicotine salt liquids are perfect for MTL devices and for switching from smoking. For DL devices, low‑dose freebase nicotine is usually used.
How do I mix shortfill liquids correctly with nicotine shots? ➕
Shortfills are an easy way to mix liquids with nicotine at your desired strength. Here’s how, step by step:
- Choose your target strength: Do you want 3 mg/ml or 6 mg/ml in the finished liquid?
-
Prepare nicotine shots: You need nicotine shots (usually 10 ml with 18 mg or 20 mg/ml). The amount needed depends on the shortfill size and your target strength:
- 50 ml in a 60 ml bottle + 1 shot (18/20 mg) = 60 ml at 3 mg or approx. 3.3 mg
- 100 ml in a 120 ml bottle + 2 shots (18/20 mg) = 120 ml at 3 mg or approx. 3.3 mg
- For 6 mg you’ll need more shots and possibly a separate mixing bottle.
- Open the shortfill: Remove the cap and nozzle of the shortfill bottle.
- Add the shots: Carefully pour in the required number of nicotine shots.
- Close & shake well: Put the nozzle back on and close the bottle tightly. Shake vigorously for at least 2–3 minutes so nicotine and flavour distribute evenly.
- Let it steep (optional): Many liquids taste better if they “steep” for a few hours to days after mixing. Store the bottle in a cool, dark place.
💡 Tip: Use our handy nicotine calculator or the details in the product description to work out exactly how many shots you need!
How long does e‑liquid last and how should I store it? ⏳
Most e‑liquids have a best‑before date (BBE) of around 1–2 years from manufacture if stored unopened. After opening or mixing (for shortfills/longfills), you should ideally use them within 3–6 months.
Important: The BBE is not an expiry date. With correct storage many e‑liquids are enjoyable well beyond the BBE, though flavour and nicotine effect can fade over time (especially due to oxidation). Discolouration, especially with nicotine liquids, is often part of the normal steeping process and not a sign of spoilage. If the liquid becomes cloudy or milky, you should dispose of it.
Tips for correct storage:
- Keep cool: Room temperature (around 15–20 °C) is ideal. Not in the fridge (too cold, can change viscosity).
- Keep dark: Protect from direct sunlight and strong light, as UV breaks down nicotine and flavours.
- Airtight: Always close the bottle tightly to minimise oxidation.
- Child‑safe: Store out of reach of children and pets.
💰 Savings tip: In our BBE deals section you’ll often find liquids whose best‑before date is near or recently passed at heavily reduced prices – when stored correctly they often still taste great for a long time!
Is e‑liquid harmful? What should I be aware of? ☣️
According to numerous studies, e‑liquids for vaping are significantly less harmful than tobacco smoke, as there is no combustion and therefore many carcinogens such as tar and carbon monoxide do not form. The main components PG and VG are generally recognised as safe as food additives.
However, there are some points to bear in mind:
- Nicotine: Is a neurotoxin and addictive. Liquids should be kept in child‑resistant containers and away from children. Swallowing small amounts is usually not dangerous for adults but should be avoided.
- Flavours: Are mostly food‑grade, but their long‑term effects when inhaled are still being researched. A few flavouring substances (e.g. cinnamaldehyde, diacetyl – the latter largely banned in the EU) can potentially be irritating.
- Overheating: At excessively high power or incorrect use, unwanted breakdown products (e.g. formaldehyde) can form. Modern devices often have protective mechanisms.
- Quality: Only buy liquids from reputable vendors like Vape.CH who offer tested products. Unknown or illegal products (especially those with THC/vitamin E acetate) pose significant health risks.
🛡️ Safety tip: Only use liquids as intended in suitable e‑cigarettes and always pay attention to quality and origin.
