Shortfill Liquids explained: Simple, practical, personalised

What exactly is a shortfill liquid?

A shortfill liquid is a larger bottle (e.g. 60ml, 100ml or 120ml) that is already filled with flavour and a nicotine-free e-liquid base (usually with a higher VG content for dense vapour). The name "shortfill" comes from the fact that the bottle is not completely full ("short filled"). Space is deliberately left so you can add one or more nicotine shots to reach your desired nicotine strength.

If you prefer to vape nicotine-free, you can simply top up the empty space with a nicotine-free base, or vape the shortfill as it is (it will then be slightly more flavour-rich). Shortfills are a very popular way to get larger amounts of liquid cost-effectively and with a nicotine dose that suits you. (What’s the difference vs longfill & pure flavour?)

⚙️ Mixing shortfill liquid: child’s play in just a few steps

1. Preparation

Have your shortfill liquid and the required nicotine shots ready.

2. Open the shortfill

Remove the cap and the dropper tip from the bottle.

3. Add nicotine shots

Pour in the desired number of shots (How many?).

4. Shake & vape

Shake vigorously – usually ready to vape right away.

Answers to common questions about mixing, nicotine strength and choosing shortfill e-liquids.

All three are made for DIY mixing, but the effort and flexibility differ:

  • Shortfill: A large bottle that already contains flavour and nicotine-free base. You only add nicotine shots to reach your desired strength (or nicotine-free base if you want to vape 0mg). Very easy!
  • Longfill: Contains only the flavour in an oversized bottle. You add the full base (PG/VG of your choice) AND the nicotine shots yourself. Offers more flexibility for the PG/VG ratio.
  • Flavour concentrate: Just the highly concentrated flavour in a small bottle. You need a separate mixing bottle and mix base and shots entirely yourself. Maximum control, but more work.

💡 What this means for you: Shortfills are easiest if you only want to adjust nicotine strength. Longfills give you more control over the base. Flavour concentrates are for experienced mixers.

The amount of nicotine shots you need (usually 10ml with 18mg/ml or 20mg/ml) depends on your shortfill bottle size and your desired final nicotine strength.

Common examples for shortfills designed for 3mg or 6mg:

  • 50ml liquid in a 60ml bottle:
    • + 1x 10ml shot (18mg) makes 60ml with 3mg/ml nicotine.
    • + 1x 10ml shot (20mg) makes 60ml with approx. 3.33mg/ml nicotine.
  • 100ml liquid in a 120ml bottle:
    • + 2x 10ml shots (18mg) make 120ml with 3mg/ml nicotine.
    • + 2x 10ml shots (20mg) make 120ml with approx. 3.33mg/ml nicotine.

For higher strengths like 6mg in common shortfills:

  • 50ml liquid in a 60ml bottle for 6mg: This is tricky, because two 18mg shots (20ml) would be too much. You could add one 18mg shot and remove some liquid, or use higher-concentration boosters in a smaller amount (if available). Often it’s easier to choose a 10ml ready-made e-liquid or a longfill for 6mg.
  • 100ml liquid in a 120ml bottle for 6mg: Here, four 18mg shots (40ml) would overfill the bottle. Longfills or mixing with flavour concentrates are more flexible.

💡 My recommendation: Most shortfills are designed for a final strength of 3mg. For higher strengths, longfills or mixing with flavour concentrates are often a better fit. Also use our nicotine calculator!

Many shortfills are “shake and vape”, meaning you can vape them right after adding nicotine shots and shaking well.

However, similar to longfills:

  • Complex flavours (especially dessert, cake or tobacco notes) can benefit from a few days up to 1–2 weeks of steeping. The flavour often becomes smoother and fuller.
  • Simple fruit flavours or menthol are usually perfect right away.

How to steep? Store the closed bottle in a cool, dark place and shake briefly once a day.

💡 In practice: Try it right after mixing. If the flavour doesn’t feel “complete” yet, give it a few days. It’s less often a must for shortfills than for flavour concentrates or some longfills.

Most shortfill liquids use a nicotine-free base with a higher VG (vegetable glycerin) content.

Typical PG/VG ratios for shortfills are:

  • 70% VG / 30% PG: Very common, ideal for big clouds and a smooth hit in DL devices (sub-ohm).
  • 80% VG / 20% PG: Even more VG for maximum vapour production, very smooth.
  • Less often 50% VG / 50% PG: Sometimes found in shortfills intended for MTL users or restricted DL vaping who prefer a stronger flavour.

Higher VG makes the vapour denser and smoother, which is especially pleasant for direct-lung inhaling (DL). PG primarily carries flavour.

💡 Important: Always check the product description and make sure the PG/VG ratio matches your coil/tank and your preferred draw style. For strict MTL devices, high-VG shortfills can be too thick.

Yes, absolutely! There are two ways to vape shortfills nicotine-free:

  1. Vape it as is (more intense flavour): You can vape the shortfill straight from the bottle without adding anything. Because the flavour is dosed for the final total volume (including shots), the taste will be a bit more intense. Many people like that!
  2. Top up with nicotine-free base: To “dilute” it to the manufacturer’s intended flavour level and fill the bottle, simply top up the empty space with a matching nicotine-free base (0mg) in the right PG/VG ratio.

💡 What this means for you: You can choose—enjoy it neat for extra flavour, or top up with 0mg base for the intended flavour balance.
